Martinique - First days ...
On 2nd of June Steffi and I started our 2 weeks trip to Martinique (more info at wikipedia.org) to visit Gertsch and Holli. In this blog entry I summarize our first days on the island.
All the pictures we'll take I upload to picasaweb into my public gallery . If you click on the picture you'll jump directly to it in picasaweb.
Arrival

We left Gastein on a typical rainy day at 5am in the morning. By car we drove to Munich airport where we catched our Air France plane to Paris - Charles De Gaulle (CDG). There we where a little surprised when we were told to take the bus to Paris - Orly to get our connection flight. The 4 hours break between the two flights then wasn't that long as the bus trip took exactly an hour and we needed quite some time to find the bus station before.

Finally after about 21hours travelling at 7pm local time we were landing at Le Lamentin - Fort-De-France International airport on Martinique.
Gertsch and his girlfriend Pauline already waited for us since we were one hour late.
We just picked up our rental car from Hertz and drove to Gertsch home which is located in a village nearby Fort-De-France called Schoelcher. Schoelcher itself is named after Viktor Schoelcher who initiated the abolishment of slavery in France.
Day One - Overcoming the jet lag
| Von Martinique - ... |
On our first day we were still very tired from travelling, so we didn't want to do too much. We drove to the south of the island and went to a beach near Les Anses-d'Arlet.
It was the first time I went snorkeling ever. I saw various different fish types where I actually don't know the names, however I could watch two turtles. One of them was quite big and had a pilot fish hanging on the tail.
In the late afternoon we drove on to Le Marin for dinner. Afterwards we returned to Les Anses-d'Arlet and went to a beach bar. Typically for Sunday evening there was a Reggae band playing. It was quite funny to watch all those Rastamen dancing and shaking...
Second Day - Shoppin'
On Monday we went to Fort-De-France to shop some - I call it - stuff.

Before in the morning we looked for Mangos in the garden in front of the house. Gertsch found some, so we had a fruity breakfast.
Beside Mangos they have banana trees, Wasserapfel (Syzygium aqueum), breadfruit, citrons and tangarines. Not to mention all those animals who a responsible for the jungle sound.
In the afternoon we enjoyed a fresh healthy beer on the local beach in Schoelcher.

Third Day - Trip to the North
| Von Martinique - ... |
On day number three we did a trip to the north. Gertsch and Pauline showed us their most favorite beach on Martinique.

This time Gertsch tried to hunt some fish with his harpoon. He had bad luck and didn't catch any fish after meeting three Barracudas . He preferred to leave the reef afterwards.
